Northern Kentucky transfer forward LJ Wells has committed to the Louisville Cardinals, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. He spent the past four seasons at Northern Kentucky and is coming off the best year of his college career.
Wells averaged 15.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last season, establishing himself as one of the Norse’s most productive players. Now, Wells will make the move to the ACC and join Pat Kelsey’s roster at Louisville.

The addition comes amid a complicated eligibility landscape surrounding fifth-year college athletes. Wells was one of several plaintiffs involved in a Kentucky lawsuit challenging the NCAA’s rules restricting eligibility for players seeking another season.
A Jefferson Circuit Court judge granted a temporary restraining order in the case, allowing the plaintiffs to continue pursuing additional eligibility. Wells was listed alongside several other athletes in the case, including Missouri basketball standout Mark Mitchell and Louisville football players D’Angelo Hutchinson and Jabari Mack.
The legal challenge came after the NCAA implemented a new age-based eligibility model. That framework has led to multiple lawsuits around the country from athletes seeking fifth-year opportunities.
Alas, Louisville has already benefited from that shifting landscape. Earlier this month, former North Carolina guard Seth Trimble was added to the same TRO against the NCAA after previously being ruled ineligible following a separate appeals court decision.
Trimble, who spent four years at North Carolina, joined Louisville after averaging 7.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists across 126 career games with the Tar Heels. Kelsey praised Trimble’s experience and toughness when Louisville announced his addition, calling him a “steadying force” who could immediately impact the Cardinals on both ends of the floor.
Moving forward, Wells gives Louisville another veteran option. After four seasons at Northern Kentucky, he brings proven production and experience into a roster that continues to take shape ahead of the 2026-27 season.
His double-digit points per game last year marked a strong scoring season, while his over seven rebounds per contest should help Louisville on the glass. Wells also showed some playmaking ability with multiple assists per game on average.
For Louisville, the addition represents another late roster move made possible by the ongoing eligibility changes across college basketball. Wells will now look to carry his production from Northern Kentucky into ACC competition as he begins the next chapter of his college career with the Cardinals.
