1. Jennifer Hudson — The American Idol Contestant Who Became an Oscar Winner. Age at breakthrough: 25

Getting eliminated from American Idol didn’t stop Jennifer Hudson from becoming a superstar. After placing seventh on the show’s third season in 2004, she made an unforgettable leap to the big screen as Effie White in the 2006 musical drama Dreamgirls.
Her powerhouse performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, making her one of the film’s biggest success stories. Talk about turning a setback into a standing ovation.
Jennifer Hudson continues to break barriers today. She is the second Black woman (and the youngest Black woman) to achieve EGOT status, having won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. Her record-breaking streak began in 2007, when she earned an Oscar for her unforgettable portrayal of Effie White in Dreamgirls. She went on to snag a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album in 2009 for her self-titled debut album and a Daytime Emmy Award as an executive producer of the 2020 virtual reality film Baba Yaga. She later added another major milestone to her résumé, earning her first Tony Award as a co-producer of the Broadway musical A Strange Loop, which won Best Musical in 2022.
