President Donald Trump is using his executive power to rewrite the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ future.
The living memorial honors the nation’s 35th president, but under Trump’s control, the cultural center has become a battleground over its legacy.
Under the president’s control, the center’s nosedive includes humiliating realities like widespread pushback against rebranding it as the Trump-Kennedy Center.

Ticket sales are plummeting, and artists are backing out of performances.
The grim reality also includes the threat of bankruptcy and speculation that Trump may consider demolishing parts of the center. Caught in the crossfire is the art that has filled the complex for decades.

The Kennedy Center closed Sept. 15 for a two-year renovation.
Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex-officio trustee, has launched an ongoing legal battle against the center’s board, challenging the closure.
Trump appointed himself chairman of the arts complex and installed board members last February. He made it one of his first changes at the Washington, D.C., cultural landmark.
The focus on art, some gifted and others loaned by benefactors, has donors questioning what will happen to the exhibit pieces.
According to the institution’s statement provided to CNN, the “cornerstone of the collection — historic international gifts given to the Center for its opening — remains intact.”
The representative added that officials have fully safeguarded the art throughout the closure and planned renovations. “We remain in regular contact with the foundations and entities who have donated art to the Center.”
Officials quietly began selling some of the center’s art, including the large “Blue” sculpture on the campus, this year.
A memo circulated among stakeholders indicated that officials planned to return several art pieces to their countries of origin.
However, doubts continue to linger. “There is a major concern that a lot of this artwork is being pushed around the center,” a donor told CNN.
“Responses on this have been very inadequate or not clear, or you know ‘everything is safe and sound, rest assured’ kind of thing,” said one source.
Josef Palermo, former Kennedy Center visual arts curator, witnessed the aftermath of the Africa Lounge’s dismantling.
“Walking into it when it was hollowed out and darkened, and my heart really sank,” he expressed. “The room was completely stripped bare.”
Palermo claims Trump wants “all new art” for the reopening.” His critics suspect Trump is carrying out another scheme behind the scenes.
“The money to renovate The KENNEDY CENTER has already been allocated,” ,” a Trump detractor exclaimed. “The only thing standing in the way is Donald Trump’s ego.”
Last year, Congress approved approximately $257 million for repairs, restoration, and other improvements at the Kennedy Center, providing funding for a major overhaul of the cultural complex.
“All of the artwork will be moved to Mar-a-Lago,” one skeptic wrote on Facebook.
On IG Threads, a user quipped that the guise of a renovation has become “The most epic heist… he stole an entire country. Art is long gone.”
A fourth reaction read, “They’re are selling it off to the highest bidder.”
A federal judge ordered the center to remove Trump’s name from its marble facade in June.
He is fighting to have his name restored to the facade and added to other areas of the campus.
A large scaffolding covered with a white tarp has stood over the main entrance, blocking Kennedy’s name since the embarrassment.
